The Goodbyes and Hellos of a Long-Distance Move
Hi, I'm Linda Weiskoff, sharing a bit about the goodbyes and hellos of making a long-distance move.
Moves are difficult! People relocate for many reasons: a new job, job transfer, being closer to family, seeking adventure, or countless other motivations. Whatever your reason, moving means saying goodbye to people and places you love, leaving behind your familiar home, habits, and hangouts. Preparing for a move also involves decisions about what to carry with you and what to leave behind. But even amidst the goodbyes, you carry your memories with you.
As you get ready for your new destination, there are many things to consider. Do you want to secure housing before moving, or would you prefer temporary housing until you find a more permanent home? Which neighborhoods appeal to you? Where are the grocery stores, restaurants, and places of worship? Which areas have the best schools if you have children? Would you like proximity to parks and green spaces? And as you mourn what you've left behind, how can you remain receptive to the new experiences and "hellos" awaiting you?
Once you've settled in your new town, take time to reflect on what comforts you. What elements of your previous home would you like to integrate to make your new place feel homey? What new items or touches will you add to ensure it's warm and welcoming? Perhaps take a walk around your new property to familiarize yourself and feel a sense of ownership.
Explore your new surroundings. Where are the shops, libraries, and gyms? Are there scenic walks nearby, or will you need to venture a bit further? Where might you find that perfect cup of coffee or local stores to frequent? If you need a guide, the local Chamber of Commerce is a valuable resource.
Identify activities you love. Local newspapers often spotlight community events. The library might have details on reading groups, and through these gatherings, you can learn about other local activities. Many areas offer walking groups, coffee meet-ups, or dinner groups. Consider checking out meetup.com to find local gatherings. Whether you're into coffee chats, game nights, hiking, or lunch groups, you're likely to find something of interest there.
Remember to prioritize self-care. Relocating can be stressful, so show yourself some kindness. Soon enough, you'll create new memories, and this once-foreign place will feel increasingly like home.
